Cowboy Henk is definitely one of a kind – but he’s also a bizarre mix of a whole bunch of other things – there are clear traces of well known characters like Tintin, superman and RanXerox – but also a few nods and winks to Tom of Finland, Roy Lichtenstein and Dick Tracy – and this manic mixture all swings about on a trapeze of totally original, totally absurd and mind blowing Belgian humour.
Cowboy Henk’s debut in Danish comes not a moment too soon – internationally speaking he’s already an old boy on the scene – going all the way back to 1981. Even so – when he measures up alongside all the excellent foreign comics that have made it into translation in recent years – there can only be room for one winner – and that winner is – without doubt – Cowboy Henk.
The Italian wit and intellectual Umberto Eco once said about tonight’s winner that: – ‘Cowboy Henk isn’t always good – but when it is good – it’s really good’ – and he’s completely right about that. So thanks to the publisher – Forlaget Forlæns – for bringing Cowboy Henk to Denmark, and congratulations to Cowboy Henk’s creators, Herr Seele and Kamagurka.
